Peninsula Town Center Announces bd’s Mongolian Grill

National chain will open 36th location in November 2009

Hampton, Va. – This fall, Peninsula Town Center will welcome Virginia’s first bd’s Mongolian Grill, a Minneapolis-based concept known for being the “World’s Number One Create Your Own Stir Fry Restaurant.”

bd’s will be located next to Chipotle in a building facing the new Target, which opened on July 22.  The new restaurant will occupy 6,239 square feet of space and plans to hire approximately 100 employees; hiring will begin in mid-October.

Founded in 1992, bd’s has grown to 35 locations in 11 states, offering an interactive casual dining experience where guests choose their own ingredients.  Options include a variety of meats, seafood, vegetables, salads and sauces, including four gluten-free sauces, which are prepared by a master griller on a 600°, seven-foot grill.  All products, including oils, noodles, desserts and dressings, are trans-fat free.

The term “Mongolian” refers to the cooking style, not the type of food.  In addition to its popular stir-fry bowls, bd’s serves everything from spaghetti and meatballs to nachos, all prepared Mongolian-style, a term that refers to the use of a long metal skewer to grill the food over a flat, heated, metal surface.

“This brand was built with respect for the Mongolian culture and its style of cooking,” says Roger Head, President and CEO of bd’s Mongolian Grill.  “It’s a fun, interactive dining experience that truly offers something for everyone.”

In 2005, bd’s founder, Billy Downs, traveled to Mongolia to help a local entrepreneur open a location.  According to his peers, Downs wanted to pay tribute to the Mongolian people in appreciation of all he learned through the development of bd’s.  Located in the capital of Ulaanbaatar, it is the first and only American franchise in Mongolia. It is owned and operated locally, and a portion of profits benefits the Mongolian Youth Development Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing youth development programs in that Asian country.

bd’s also plans to be extremely active in the local Hampton Roads community, offering fundraising opportunities for non-profit organizations to participate in the “Guest Griller” program.

The Peninsula Town Center location will offer catering options, bringing the Mongolian cooking experience to weddings, graduations, office parties and more.

“Our opening in Hampton will bring over 100 jobs to the Hampton area,” said Rodger Head.  “We’re excited about our new site and being part of this community, and we look forward to offering the people of Hampton Roads the best Mongolian dining experience in the world.”
