Hampton Roads Landmark to Have New Life as Senior Housing Development
Nearly 80 years after it opened as a premier lodging complex on the Chesapeake Bay, The Chamberlin Hotel at Fort Monroe in Hampton is undergoing a major transformation. And we are pleased that Drucker & Falk Real Estate, headquartered in Hampton, has chosen Rubin Communications Group to help promote it to prospective residents.
The Chamberlin, built in 1928, once attracted thousands of vacationers as well as high-ranking military officials. After 9-11, however, security concerns forced its closure. In 2004, Drucker & Falk purchased it and is now renovating it into a 133-unit senior living apartment home complex. With panoramic views of the Chesapeake Bay, it will feature multiple dining and retail options, ongoing events, a fitness area with an indoor pool and a wellness center managed by Sentara Health Care.
Rubin Communications Group will assist The Chamberlin with marketing initiatives to publicize living opportunities through media relations efforts and special events, including a grand opening, which is scheduled for late spring 2008.
“It’s incredible to witness the changes taking place there,” says Sara Jo Rubin. “We are thrilled to be a part of the project as it recreates our region’s history.”

For Joel Rubin, who covered many events at The Chamberlin as a local TV reporter in the 1980’s and used to deliver bread and cakes there while working for his family’s Newport News bakery in the early 1970’s, the assignment generates quite a bit of nostalgia. “I saw the Chamberlin through its glory days and as it fell into disrepair,” says Joel. “It is terrific to see it coming back to life as a senior housing facility. We are honored to be involved.”
