Rubin Communications Group In Action

Local Dentist Credits RCG Training With Winning National Office

Ron Tankersley had a lofty ambition, but a nagging doubt.

Highly regarded on a national level in the dental profession, the Newport News oral surgeon had decided to pursue the presidency of the 70,000 member American Dental Association; but to be elected, he knew he had to become a more polished public speaker.

The Virginia Dental Association, which was eager to have one of its own members head up the national organization, turned to Joel Rubin of Rubin Communications Group to help Dr. Tankersley refine his message.

During several private tutoring sessions and before groups of dentists, Joel guided Dr. Tankersley in making a strong pitch for his election. "I wanted him to be bold and ask for their vote," says Joel. "It's hard for most people to promote themselves, as it was for Dr. Tankersley. But he was a great student."

Prior to the ADA's national convention in mid-October in San Antonio, Dr. Tankersley traveled to dental caucus meetings across the country, meeting with prospective delegates. "Joel's advice really helped me frame my argument and make a connection with audiences," says Dr. Tankersley.

When it came time for San Antonio, he was ready. And so were the delegates, who voted overwhelmingly for him to be their President-elect after he delivered his nominating speech. "As it turned out, I captured 2/3's of the vote, which was overwhelming and very gratifying," he says.

As the ADA's president-elect now and president next year, Dr. Tankersley will represent his colleagues in what will certainly be important debates about the future of all health care delivery.

At RCG, we are proud that Dr. Tankersley will head of one of the nation's largest professional organizations; and that we had a role in helping him perform so well and confidently in the intense campaign that led to his election.
